Read this excerpt from Through the Looking-Glass by Lewis Carroll.
She was rambling on in this way when she reached the wood: it looked very cool and shady. “Well, at any rate it's a great comfort,” she said as she stepped under the trees, “after being so hot, to get into the—into WHAT?” she went on, rather surprised at not being able to think of the word. “I mean to get under the—under the—under THIS, you know!” putting her hand on the trunk of the tree. “What DOES it call itself, I wonder? I do believe it's got no name—why, to be sure it hasn't!”
She stood silent for a minute, thinking: then she suddenly began again. “Then it really HAS happened, after all! And now, who am I? I WILL remember, if I can! I'm determined to do it!” But being determined didn't help much, and all she could say, after a great deal of puzzling, was, “L, I KNOW it begins with L!”
Which question might a reader ask to gain a better understanding of this excerpt?
Why does Alice choose to step through the looking glass?
Why does Alice forget the name of the woods and her own name?
Why does Alice want to play chess with all the others in the garden?

U.S. elections 2020: a guide to the race for the White House

------------------------------------------------
On November 3, 2020, Americans will head to the polls and vote. Here is an overview of two parts of the election process.
What's the 2020 election all about?
This election's main event is choosing who will hold the next presidential term. Voters will also decide which party will control the U.S. Congress for the next two years and which party dominates in state legislatures and governorships. Still, the big question is whether President Donald Trump can win reelection, so all eyes are on the Democrats and the candidate they will nominate to take on Trump.
In 2016, Trump's election was an unexpected victory over Democrat Hillary Clinton. Trump won swing states, or states that do not have a clear party alignment. This included Florida and North Carolina. Some blue states, or those that historically vote Democrat, turned red for Republican, including Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan. In 2020, however, the Democratic candidate will be different, the issues are different, and the electorate, or pool of American voters, has changed.
Democrats will try to defend their majority in the House of Representatives, where all 435 seats are up for election. They will also try to take control of the Senate, where 34 of the 100 seats will be voted on. Elections will also be held at the local and state level, including 11 elections for governor.
Who can vote?
There are more than 250 million people of voting age in the United States in 2020. That electorate will be different from the one in 2016. The voters will be more racially diverse and younger than ever. They will consist of about 33 percent non-white voters and 10 percent Generation Z voters, or those between the ages of 18 and 23.
In 2016, about 42 percent of Americans who were able to vote decided not to or were blocked from voting. However, the 2018 midterm elections saw a huge surge in voter turnout. This could mean the 2020 elections could see an expanded electorate. At the same time, experts say efforts to block voters may have hindered Democrats in 2018, and may continue to be an obstacle in the upcoming vote.

02.02 The Great North American Circus
There was great excitement in Smyrna, especially among the boys. Barlow's Great American Circus in its triumphal progress from state to state was close at hand, and immense yellow posters announcing its arrival were liberally displayed on fences and barns, while smaller bills were put up in the post office, the hotel, and the principal stores, and distributed from house to house.
It was the largest circus that had ever visited Smyrna. At least a dozen elephants marched with ponderous steps in its preliminary procession, while clowns, acrobats, giants, dwarfs, fat women, cannibals, and hairy savages from Tibet and Madagascar were among the strange wonders that were to be seen at each performance for the small sum of fifty cents, children half price.
For weeks the young people had been looking forward to the advent of this marvelous world of curiosities, and the country papers from farther east had given glowing accounts of the great show, which was pronounced greater and more gorgeous than in any previous year. But it may be as well to reproduce, in part, the description given in the posters:
BARLOW'S GREAT NORTH AMERICAN CIRCUS.
Now in its triumphal march across the continent, will
give two grand performances,
AT SMYRNA
on the afternoon and evening of May 18th.
Never in all its history has this
unparalleled show embraced a greater variety of attractions,
or included a larger number of world-famous
acrobats, clowns, bare back riders, rope walkers, trapeze
artists, and star performers,
in addition to a colossal menagerie, comprising
elephants, tigers, lions, leopards,
and other wild animals in great variety.
All this and far more, including a hundred
DARING ACTS,
can be seen for the trifling sum of fifty cents;
children half price.
COME ONE! COME ALL!
Two boys paused to read this notice, pasted with pictures of elephants and circus performers on the high board fence near Stoddard's grocery store. They were Dan Clark and Christopher Watson, called Kit for short.

What is the main idea of this paragraph??
Confucius is an important Chinese historical figure who adopted and taught a set of morals and life lessons that some people still practice. The morals and life lessons showed how the ruling class of China should behave. Confucius gave up a good-paying government job to teach about what he called “beautiful conduct.” His followers, called disciples, listened to his teachings and wrote them down. These written documents formed a social code, or way that a society should behave. The social code was passed down to each generation of the ruling class. Confucius believed that if those in authority set a good example, those in the lower classes would follow accordingly. (30 points)
Answer: The main idea of this paragraph is Confucius.
Answer:
The first sentence is the topic sentence: “Confucius is an important Chinese historical figure who adopted and taught a set of morals and life lessons that some people still practice.”
The main idea in this paragraph is that Confucius was significant because his ideas were written and passed down to the ruling class of Chinese for generations.

Cheryl has written an essay for her English class. Read Cheryl's rough draft then answer the questions that follow.
An Adventure of a Lifetime
(1) More and more people are starting to look in places other than their chosen career paths to find meaning and satisfaction in life, and one of the most popular
ways folks are doing this is through volunteerism. (2) One specific kind of volunteerism, though, is becoming increasingly popular with people of all ages and stages
in life—volunteer vacations. (3) This kind of vacation, one where the traveler pays her own way and volunteers her time and efforts while on the trip, is being
embraced by people all over the world. (4) The best thing about volunteer vacations is that not only does the traveler get to escape her familiar surroundings and
see new sights, but she also comes home knowing that she has done something. (5) That knowledge brings a kind of satisfaction that a regular vacation cannot
deliver.
(6) Volunteer vacations take travelers almost anywhere across the globe to work on a huge selection of causes. (7) Worried about the elephants in Sri Lanka? (8)
Book a trip to its capital, Colombo, and journey to an elephant sanctuary. (9) Concerned about families living in poverty in Costa Rica? (10) Bring your whole family
down to help build new homes and learn a little Spanish while doing so. (11) Volunteer vacations can take willing helpers to the farthest reaches and most exotic
locations—some luxurious resorts are situated in areas that are steeped in poverty, so vacationers willing to spend half their time working can visit such places in
beautiful countries such as Bali, Mexico, and Brazil. (12) There is almost no limit to where adventurers can go.
(13) Perhaps the most compelling reason to consider a volunteer vacation is the feeling of intrinsic happiness and satisfaction of doing important, helpful work. (14)
Even if a volunteer cannot stay in the location long enough to see a project to its completion, just knowing that one’s work has helped people in need, brought vital
resources to folks who needed it, or helped to save endangered plants or animals brings a kind of pride and sense of meaning that simply spending money to lie by a
pool could never deliver. (15) This alone is part of what has caused volunteer vacations to become awesomely popular across the globe.
(16) There may be no better feeling than being able to visit an exotic location, learn something new, and return home knowing that one’s efforts have helped to
change the world. (17) Because the whole goal behind a vacation is to escape one’s usual, familiar surroundings and refuel, volunteer vacations seem like a win-win
situation with a promise of some kind of success for both the volunteer and those helped by the work. (18) For these reasons, a volunteer vacation is an adventure of
a lifetime.
1) Cheryl needs to provide the source material she used for writing her essay. Which is the correct way to write a bibliography entry for the magazine she used?
Miller, Kelsey. “Vacation Volunteers.” Easy Travels Monthly, Aug. 2019, pp. 18–22.
Miller notes that volunteer vacations are “easy as pie” (19).
Kelsey Miller’s “Vacation Volunteers” in Easy Travels Monthly.
“Vacation Volunteers,” by Kelsey Miller, tells about volunteer vacation options (Easy Travels Monthly magazine).
2) What is the best way to rewrite sentence 5?
Old enough to enter the ring and finally qualified enough and with my very own horse, I was finally, here.
And, finally, now, I was old enough to enter the ring and finally qualified enough and with my very own horse.
And now here I was, finally old enough to enter the ring, finally qualified enough, and with my very own horse.
I am finally old enough, and am now here to enter the ring and finally qualified enough and with my very own horse.
3) What change, if any, should be made to sentence 14?
Insert a hyphen after hand
Change immeasurably to imeasurably
Change had to have
No change is needed in sentence 14.
4) What change should be made in sentence 17?

Change sat to sit
Insert a comma after anticipation
